A Message from Our Principal, LeRoy Hall Jr.

It is with great pride and excitement that I welcome you to Henry H. Houston Elementary School!  It is an honor and pleasure to serve you and your children. There are many things to look forward to this year at Houston.

We have experienced challenges within the last six months; however, as usual, the Houston family comes together and jointly rises to the occasion! Our diversity and ability to work as a cooperative community are what strengthen us! Houston prides itself on being able to adjust within the ever-changing educational landscape. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers have been trained in delivering high-quality virtual instruction, systems have been established for student success, and we continue to focus upon rigorous instruction that meets needs and empowers students. In addition to robust learning opportunities in the core subjects (English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies), our programming will continue to include STEM, Digital Literacy, Music, and Physical Education/Health classes for all children.

As we modify our teaching and learning to a virtual format, it is important that we, as a school community, address the jarring topic of racism and social injustice.

As a continuing response to the need for schools to address and promote equity, Houston staff  will receive training in anti-racism and culturally responsive pedagogy. We are also excited about our engagement in the district’s Healing Together Initiative this year! Each child’s learning experience will continue to be led by talented educators who are dedicated to the future success of Houston’s students. We will continue to provide opportunities for representation and learning through fun events, carefully chosen curricular materials, and an adopted mindset of equity and inclusiveness.

This year may look and feel different from years of the past; but I am completely confident in our school community’s ability to step up to the challenge and make strides! We look forward to working alongside our families and community partners to ensure that each child’s academic, social, and emotional needs are met. Above all, our goal this and every year is for each Houston child to be provided with an education that enables them to reach their fullest potential and achieve their dreams.

Welcome to another year at Houston, a place where education opens the doors to dreams!

Sincerely,

LeRoy Hall, Jr.
